This Took Way Longer Than it Should: HGUC Unicorn Gundam [Destroy Mode] – Completed Build

The last kit I built was technically the new parts from The Sorcery of Nymph Circe version of the HGUC Xi Gundam, which was around mid to late July. However, the last complete kit I actually build was the HGUC Unicorn Gundam [Unicorn Mode] back in early July. I was planning to follow it up with the HGUC Unicorn Gundam [Destroy Mode] in time with the closure if the Life-Sized Unicorn Gundam Statue in Odaiba, Tokyo.

However, the rainy monsoon season had other plans, so my annual pause was extended until mid-September. And only around mid-October was I able to finish this kit, a good month and a half after the statue started being dismantled.

Yes, this kit was originally released 17 years ago and has been milked to death with countless recolors and variations — and I’m only building one in 2026. I am aware folks tend to trash on this kit with the relatively more limited articulation range and dated engineering, but it still looks really good when built properly.

From the get go, I already decided to paint the Psycho-Frame parts in metallic red. It just looks better than the “toyetic” look of the clear red plastic. It did took me a while which paint to use and I ended up with Dspiae’s Metallic Red intended for their no-wash airbrush system. I also went ahead and used red for the panel lines instead of the usual gray. This further sold the blood vein look the Unicorn Gundam has in Destroy Mode.

Outside of these, I also painted parts of the shield and the Beam Magnum, but nothing really out of the ordinary.

It might’ve taken me 17 years, but I’m finally glad to have this pair of Unicorn Gundam kits in my collection. I’ll probably track down the HGUC Full Armor Unicorn Gundam [Destroy Mode] kit just for completion but I have no plans of building the same kit any time soon. I do have plans to keep this Psycho-Frame momentum going so I might build the HGUC Narrative Gundam C-Packs next.

And I hope that kit won’t take me more than two months to finish.
