Despite looking really goofy, the Special Airborne Armors from Ultraman Z have their charms. So much so that I immediately pulled the trigger when Tamashii Nations decided to release S.H.Figuarts Space Sevenger as I missed getting the original Sevenger. They also released S.H.Figuarts King Joe STORAGE Custom which, for some reason, didn’t pique my interest. I wasn’t sure if they’re going to complete all three units, but it looks like they are as they’ve now opened solicitations for the last Special Airborne Armor to get a figure — S.H.Figuarts SC-2 Windom.
To those unfamiliar, all three machines are based on legacy monster designs and Windom is probably the closest to the original. Thanks to its metallic look and segmented armor-like design on the arms and legs, Windom passes as a robot much easier and not much was changed from the original.
As for the S.H.Figuarts version, it really captures how the suit looks in the series thanks to their collaboration with Tsuburaya Productions’ LSS modeling department.
Windom’s design is quite straightforward so I don’t think there should be any problems when talking about articulation. That said, integrating those segmented armor panels on the elbows and hips while still maintaining a good range of articulation is something to look at when getting this figure. And based on these images, that shouldn’t be an issue.
This set also comes with a good number of effect parts to replicate Windom’s attacks from the series. These include those for the “High Rotation Hardcore Iron Fist”, missiles and trails for the Type 20 Anti-Monster Guided Bullets, and as shown here, a replacement hand for the “Windom Yoko Impact” attack. You can also replace the neck panel to show the opening cockpit hatch.
I’m not exactly a collector of robots or mecha that appear in tokusatsu except Mechagodzilla and its multiple variants. But, as seen with Sevenger, I am also making another set of exceptions with the Special Airborne Armors from Ultraman Z since they really have that charm, especially Sevenger and Windom. I just think King Joe STORAGE Custom looks too different in that it doesn’t give the same charm.
But regardless, there’s a good chance that I might get Windom based on the stuff I mentioned above.
