Teased earlier this year as part of the Gunpla 40th Anniversary celebration, Bandai Spirits has finally revealed the Perfect Grade Unleashed RX-78-2 Gundam and finally explains what makes this kit, unleashed. I don’t know about you but I think these new lines are getting crazier names, with Master Grade Extreme previously and now the Perfect Grade Unleashed. And I got to give props to the design team over at the Bandai Hobby Division for being able to crank out like 5 or so RX-78-2 kits spread across multiple scales, mostly 1/144. I can imagine the thought of having to release he same thing albeit a little different.
This kit is essentially the culmination of the Gunpla Evolution Project which was started a few years back and stands as the pinnacle of Gunpla engineering with the Gunpla Evolution Link System. It is essentially a phased approach in the build of the kit that produces a very engaging experience and a kit with multiple gimmicks and a wide range of articulation. I won’t attempt to explain it myself as Bandai Spirits released a video of their Gunpla Presentation VR earlier to explain everything to know about this kit.
Just a few things to note. Phase 01 describes the assembly of the main internal structure and it appears to be very similar to the Advanced MS Joint runners as seen in earlier Real Grades, and not so much today. I’m curious whether they’ve already perfected such approach to the construction and prevent the same issues as its smaller counterpart. Also interesting is the multi-layer approach they’ve adapted for this kit. Starting with the base structure, you build the articulation mechanisms on top and cap it off with truss-like panels that give the internal frame copious amounts of detail.
While I’m not getting this kit, I do admit that this kit looks really cool, and deserves that "Unleashed" moniker they stuck to the Perfect Grade line. I’m not sure if this is just a one off thing or they’ll essentially do version 2.0s of older Perfect Grades as Perfect Grade Unleashed kits. Either way, you can get yours this December, a perfect way to wrap up a terrible year.
