In what appears to be a slap to Machinima and their Transformers Prime Wars Trilogy animated series, the next Transformers trilogy will be a Netflix original anime. And if this Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy: Siege trailer from New York Toy Fair last weekend is of any indication, this one appears to be a lot better.
It is the final hours of the devastating civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons. The war that has torn apart their home planet of Cybertron is at a tipping point. Two leaders, Optimus Prime and Megatron, both want to save their world and unify their people, but only on their own terms. In an attempt to end the conflict, Megatron is forced to consider using the Allspark, the source of all life and power on Cybertron, to “reformat” the Autobots, thus “unifying” Cybertron. Outnumbered, outgunned, and under SIEGE, the battle-weary Autobots orchestrate a desperate series of counterstrikes on a mission that, if everything somehow goes right, will end with an unthinkable choice: kill their planet in order to save it.
The trailer gives off a darker feel that’s reminiscent of Transformers: Prime and perfectly illustrates the dire conditions in Cybertron, after being ravaged by war. Now I know this story has been told countless times across multiple continuities so it would be interesting how this one would reinvent the wheel.
Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy will be composed of three, six-episode seasons, with each episode running at 20 minutes. No premiere date has been announced as of this post.
