There’s quite a lot of things happening within the mecha sphere last week. Besides all the hobby product announcements from the Shizuoka Hobby Show, the folks over at Sunrise also had a GUNDAM CONFERENCE for Spring 2026. With just three years towards the franchise’s 50th anniversary, the announcements were geared towards this milestone. So in tradition, here are some of my unsolicited thoughts.

The logo and tagline for the Gundam 50th Anniversary in 2029 has been revealed, with the tagline “Your FIRST Starts Here.” The logo features iconic imagery like silhouettes of both the Gundam and the space colonies, with the logo mostly in shades of blue. The tagline they chose is very relevant given massive the backcatalog of works within the franchise, and newcomers often have a challenge where to start. Basically they’re saying it doesn’t really matter which “First Gundam” you choose as long as you enjoy it.
The succeeding announcements are all leads up to the grand celebration in 2029, like this next one.

You know how some major franchises have informal and formal commemorative dates? Like Star Wars has May 4 for “May the Force be with you” or how Star Trek has September 8 as the premiere of the original series? Well Gundam went with the latter route as April 7 has been recognized by the Japan Anniversary Association as the official Gundam Day. This is in commemmoration of April 7, 1979 as the premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Another activity other franchises have done, and Gundam has yet to start, is an annual convention. And so, they’ve announced GUNDAM-Con, a celebration event leading up to the 50th anniversary of the franchise. The first event will be held from Jan. 9-11 in Makuhari Messe, Chiba. That said, they are also planning subsequent events to be held internationally so it will be interesting how this would pan out. I doubt we’ll get something here in my corner of the woods, but we’ll see.

Speaking of your “First Gundam,” fans often recommend the original series with its ground-breaking storytelling and complex characters. Unfortunately, younger fans are often turned off by the dated animation, which is understandable given how anime looks nowadays. There has been discourse on whether Mobile Suit Gundam should get a modern reinterpretation like its other contemporaries, and it looks like it’s getting one in 2029.
Now whether this is totally a new production or just something like the HD Remaster Project for Gundam SEED is still up in the air. We know they’re able to replicate the animation style from 1979 as seen in the game Mobile Suit Gundam UC Engage, but I personally think it will definitely benefit from modern-looking animation, especially after we got a glimpse of them in Gundam GQuuuuuuX. This is something I’ll keep my eye on.

2025 saw the 30th anniversary of Gundam Wing, which was made more special with the release of the special video which gained an immense response from fans, especially in North America. I bet the folks over at Sunrise can’t ignore that and as expected, a new “visual production” for Gundam Wing has been announced. During the Gundam Conference stream, the host noted that the term “visual project” can range from a 10-second clip to a full 50 episode series. In response, Bandai Namco Filmworks producer Naohiro Ogata answers that while the exact format is still under wraps, it will be long.
I want to speculate that it will be some form of Frozen Teardrop adaptation along the same lines as Gundam Thunderbolt, but that’s just me guessing. Regardless, it is a good time to be a Gundam Wing fan with this announcement.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, the prequel to the 2024 film Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Fans were speculating on how this story is going to be released, but we finally got an answer as it will be a theatrical release. We’ve been getting Gundam films yearly since 2024 with SEED FREEDOM followed by Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning in 2025 and Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe this Jannuary. So I’m not surprised if SEED FREEDOM ZERO is also taking the movie route.
It’s basically expanding the quick flashback scene from SEED FREEDOM and the various literature released during its premiere, telling the “Freedom Heist Incident” staged by the Kingdom of Foundation. I want to say this release might not be in the same scale as SEED FREEDOM but more akin to the IRON-BLOODED ORPHANS Urdr-Hunt special edition complilation. But given the massive popularity of Gundam SEED in Japan, I might be totally wrong on that speculation.
No other details have been released other than the teaser video I’ve included above.

What I believe to be the highlight of this conference is the release of this short entitled A Boy with GUNDAM, the prologue movie to the Gundam 50th anniversary. It’s a nostalgia driven, heart warming video showcasing how a fan watches Gundam as a child and grows up along with the franchise. This new style of cell-shaded CG animation they used looks really good and I won’t mind if they’ll be utilizing this technique in future Gundam series.
In case you haven’t seen this clip for like 50 times, I’ve included here down below.
My last item from this list is related to the still untitled live-action GUNDAM film from Legendary and is to be distributed on Netflix. Director Jim Mickle sent a message with the usual production stuff though this confirms that this isn’t just vaporware. In fact, just like other major franchises, we also got production leaks in the form of very familiar insignias.

This doesn’t say much since the Earth Federation Forces is pretty much a staple of the franchise, regardless if it’s a Universal Century entry or something from Gundam 00 or Gundam AGE. I want to say this adaptation will not be an exact copy of the original series and will likely be an amalgamation of the almost 50 years worth of stories and concepts. There are other leaked photos online if you want to see more.
There you go, the next three years will be pretty interesting given the 50th anniversary is just around the corner, and the slew of productions ongoing at the same time. I also like how these productions cover multiple segments of the fanbase. From fans of the original to Gundam SEED and even Gundam Wing, everyone has something to lookforward to, perfectly capturing the “Your FIRST Starts Here” tagline.
I’m also speculating that we might see more Gundam Conferences within the year given this one has been tagged for Spring 2026. They might have another one this Fall or as early as Summer. But until then, we’re covered with these exciting announcements.
