This is a quick one. I mentioned previously that I was transitioning to spray cans to using Dspiae’s (not sponsored) ‘washfree’ airbrush system, and I bought several other tools in Japan as part of this transition. And now that I’m on holiday leave, I wanted to test how my new workflow based on these tools. I didn’t want to start with an involved build so I went with what I consider is the best option.
I decided to take out my 30MM Alto, and the Commander Unit option set out of the backlog pile to do an Also double build.

The kits themselves are fairly basic, being the first 30MM release. It uses a combination of C-clips and ball joints for the articulation, which they did change in the more modern releases. You can also get away with minimal painting and just inking up the panel lines, which is exactly what I did though I did some detail painting as well.
For painting these kits, I used a combination of Dspiae’s own pre-mixed colors and some decanted paint from my stockpile of Tamiya and Mr. Hobby spray cans. I had a little challenge working with the decanted Mr. Hobby primer I’m using since despite being transfered for a couple of weeks now, there are still gases remaining whenever I mix it prior to usage. I figured that I needed to wait for the paint to “stabilize” before using it with the Dspiae airbrush.

On the other hand the Tamiya ones were easier to work with and I was able to apply them sooner than the Mr. Hobby primer. I do plan to transition to their bottled variants once I’ve used all of the spray cans I have in stock.
What I look forward to the most with this workflow is finally being able to mix colors and do proper reverse washes, especially when I decide to work on the HGUC Sinanju Stein. That’s why I will spend the next couple of weeks building as much as I can to get the transitionary kinks out of the way. As for the next build, let’s see…
