I’d Normally Skip These, But Maybe Not? SMP [Shokugan Modeling Project] Hyperlion – Altairlion & Vegalion Set

We’ve been getting more Super Robot Wars kits recently, thanks to Bandai Shokugan / Candy Toy Division and Bandai Hobby stepping with releases from both SMP [Shokugan Modeling Project] and High Grade brands respectively. I mainly go with the High Grade kits due to preference, but I might have to take a detour with this latest announcement.

Bandai Candy is releasing the SMP [Shokugan Modeling Project] Hyperlion set, which is a sizable set consisting of two Armored Modules, the Altairlion and Vegalion. As someone who’s not well versed with the franchise, I’ll try to make sense of this release with two posts. This one would be focusing on the separate units while the next will be for the combined Hyperlion unit.

This Armored Module was developed for interstellar travel and space development work under “Project TD”. It is the latest model in Series 77 , equipped with two third-generation Tesla Drives (highly efficient reaction propulsion systems with gravitational and inertial mass separation capabilities), exhibiting exceptionally superior maneuverability and agility. It can transform from its standard Cruise Figure (CF) configuration to Doll Figure (DF), and is armed in anticipation of contact with hostile intelligent life forms in outer space.

Starting with the DCAM-008-2 Altairion, the first point the folks at Bandai Candy wanted to note is how this set doesn’t require any color-correcting seals to be accurate to the design. This is made with the combination of proper parts separation and some pre-painted parts.

For the sculpt and proportions, they primarily took basis on the design illustrations, which results in what may appear as slimmer torso and increased volume on the thighs. Size-wise, they are in-scale with previous SMP Super Robot Wars OG kits, standing at 133mm. While technically non-scale, I believe this should also display well with the HG Super Robot Wars OG lineup.

Transformation to Cruise Figure (CF) mode is done with minimal parts separation, just with the replacement head unit and manipulator parts. Intricate details are also sculpted for this mode, as seen with the rear thruster details, including those under the hip assembly which become the main thrusters in CF mode.

In addition to the excellent parts separation and pre-painted parts, the “Tesla Drive” markings seen here, and on the Vegalion, are recreated as tampo-printed markings. On the note of parts separation, the twin 90mm GG Cannons are sculpted in correct colors down to the muzzle. On that note, “GG” stands for “Gravity Guidance.”

Both the nacelles of the G-Accelerator Driver can be pointed forward in Doll Figure mode to reveal two high-powered railguns outside of the Tesla Drive.

Still on weapons, the set comes with the complete complement of CTM tactical integrated missiles, with both the CTM-02 Spigeaul and CTM-07 Prominence, as well as matching effect and trail parts.

Lastly, there are also massive effect parts for the Sonic Saber, one for each nacelle, made from clear translucent plastic. I just hope the kit has joints strong enough to carry these massive pieces of plastic.

Oh and if you didn’t see in the image on the top, you can combine all these weapons for the Maneuver GRaMXs attack.

This Armored Module for interstellar travel was also developed under “Project TD.” It is equipped with two third-generation Tesla Drives and achieves synchronized operation known as twin modal. Although larger than its sister unit, the Alterion, it exhibits superior maneuverability and acceleration. Furthermore, it has a larger weaponry loadout, including tactical integrated missiles, but it lacks a transformation mechanism into a Doll Figure (DF) on its own, making it somewhat less versatile.

The second half of this set is the YSF-34 Vegalion, where this is supposedly the first time this design is getting a model kit representation of any kind, especially due to its sheer size at 385mm long and 361mm wide. We’ll get more into some comparative measurements later for scale.

Much like the Altairlion, the Vegalion also has intricate parts separation – including parts molded in red , wine red, purple , gunmetal , and yellow , and metallic blue. There are also pre-painted parts and tampo-printed details like the “Tesla Drive” markings seen here.

Unlike the Altairlion, the Vegalion is unable to transform from Cruise Figure to Doll Figure without docking so to compensate, it has a comprehensive loadout of weapons. Starting with a pair of 110mm GG Cannon mounted on the top side. And yes, “GG” stands for “Gravity Guidance.”

Just like the Altairlion, the Vegalion also has its own complement of CTM tactical integrated missiles, the CTM-05 Pleiades and CTM-07 Prominence. Both have compartments for storage and launch, as well as same set of effect parts for more dynamic display options.

Also similar to the Altairlion, both ends of the nacelles can be retracted to reveal the G-Break Driver, two high-powered railguns that can hit targets well beyond the range of the CTM-07 Prominence missiles.

As mentioned, the Vegalion is primarily in Cruise Figure mode without the Altairlion, so we’ll see in the next post how both units go together to form Hyperlion.
