50 Shades of Gray? HG Gundam EX – Work in Progress #1

Well, not really 50, but there’s definitely more than one. Anyway, while everyone going gaga over the new HG GQuuuuuuX, and rightfully so since it’s quite the kit and I got my copy recently, I’m one main Gundam behind as I’m currently building the HG Gundam EX from Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. And while the preparatory painting needed for this kit ain’t as crazy as that of the GQuuuuuuX, there’s quite a few applications that can be easily missed, because they’re mostly grays.

Having a design utilizing multiple shades have both advantages and disadvantages. For one, you can easily get away with a straight build as the design looks complex enough that minute color inaccuracies aren’t that noticeable. Unfortunately, if you’re a stickler for complete color accuracy, then you will need to pay close attention as those missing colors aren’t that noticeable either. These include the hands as only the digits and the back covers are supposed to be in white, the rest are in gray. I upscaled official images of the painted kit around three times and created PDFs for color references.

Another reason I delayed this build, besides building other kits of course, is that I’m waiting for a proper waterslide decal set to come out. While many have pointed out that the stickers were actually good, waterslides are still better for such markings, and once again, Delpi Decals delivered on their sheets.

I’m currently building the rest of the arms and following some more of these small paint and decal applications, I can proceed with the lower half of this kit. I won’t be giving any timelines for completion, though I do have a kit in mind to build next. But let’s circle back to that once this guy is done.

Thoughts?
