2024 marks the 30th anniversary of G Gundam, but it also kicks off the “Gundam GWX Anniversary Project” as we saw a whole new generation of alternate universe Gundam stories starting in 1994. As my little way to mark this celebration, I aimed to complete the “hero” mobile suit, and its mid-season upgrade for these three series.
As of the other day, I’ve already built the following:
- HGFC Shining Gundam
- HGFC God Gundam
- HGAC Wing Gundam
- HGAC Wing Gundam Zero
- HGAW Gundam X
- HGAW Gundam X Divider
Which obviously leaves one more kit, and as of yesterday, I’ve finally completed it.

In my last update, I only had to build the satellite cannons and the weapons. It is common for most builders to get a little lazy once they reach the weapons part of the build process, but it’s also the part that requires paint, at least for HG kits. And the Double X is no exception, though it’s not as egregious as some more modern kits, looking at you Rising Freedom. The main satellite cannons only required some gray and black bits while the beam rifle came in all white, so that needed painting as well.
Regardless, I busted out the masking tape and went through the paces until I was able to complete them. Overall, it was a good build though I wasn’t a fan of those yellow vents on the legs and feet. Completing the Double X also crosses out any remaining HGAW kit in the backlog. I also liked how the gold on the Satellite Cannon reflector panels and the radiator fins turned out.
That said, my odyssey with gold paint is far from over, as you can see behind the Double X. I’ve secured two copies of the Mighty Strike Freedom as I wanted to build a separate Strike Freedom Type II, both of which will require more gold paint. Much like the Double X, I’m planning to tackle the gold parts first and everything should follow smoothly, except for those beam rifles.
