“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” Control Art and my Unsolicited Thoughts

This may be a piece of relatively old news, but I still want to give some unsolicited thoughts on it. Last week, Takara Tomy opened the Japanese website for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts where we got new official renders of the Transformers appearing in the movie. More importantly, we finally get a good look at how Optimus Primal‘s robot mode looks, so let’s start with that.

The current trailers show Optimus Primal mostly in his beast form and we only get a quick glimpse of his robot mode in the final seconds of the trailer. In this control art, he’s a mostly black robot with a mix of both organic and mechanical textures for his exterior. He appears to not have that face plate with a mouth that the original had, but he may have a retractable battle mask like most of the Autobots so we’ll have to wait for the movie for that. He also has the same two swords as the original, which is a nice homage as well.

Overall, he looks good, but he also definitely needs color variation as it will be hard to pick out details with this color scheme. But at least he won’t look like random shards of metal stuck together, unlike most of the Michael Bay Transformers from previous films.

We also have a better look at Optimus Prime, but we already knew that from a mile away.

I’m surprised that while some already have their hands on the mainline Rise of the Beasts Optimus Prime figure, we’re still to get leaked photos or something for Optimus Primal. I also don’t know if he’ll get both a mainline and Studio Series release or just one of them. In any case, I still like the design and it would be a fantastic addition to my existing Optimus Primal collection. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is slated for a June 9, 2023, theatrical release.
