“Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway” Coming Soon to Netflix!

Same posters with new English logo. I find the use of condensed typeface for “Mobile Suit Gundam” in English odd as the Japanese version isn’t.

June 11 appears to be a special day for the production team of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway. Not only is it finally getting released in Japanese theaters after being stuck in premiere limbo thanks to the pandemic, but we also got confirmation that the first in the movie trilogy is also coming to Netflix for international audiences. This comes after the recent announcement that both the Mobile Suit Gundam compilation movies, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack are also coming to Netflix by mid-June. And of course, the currently-untitled Gundam live-action movie.

As per the official English release trailer and Netflix’s social media accounts, the exact release date is yet to be revealed. However, the same trailer on the official Netflix Anime Youtube channel mentions a July 1 release, as seen below if they haven’t taken it down.

UPDATE: Yep, they’ve made the video private.

If the video has been taken down, either this reveal was unintended to they’ll probably move it to a later date given how the Japanese theatrical release was also moved, twice. In any case, this is definitely a good news as international fans wouldn’t have to wait long to see this film, especially given how localized screenings are up in the air given the current situation.

RANT: I still think translating “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash” to simply “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway” is kind of odd, like how “Char’s Counterattack” would just become “Gundam Char.” But Gundam Twitter speculates that “Hathaway’s Flash” might not translate well to English thanks to gutter-minded connotations with the term ‘flash’ and ‘flashing’. So yep, end rant.
