A first since they started streaming Gundam series online, the first two episodes of Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE has dropped and, I don’t know about you, but there’s something a little different with the overall feel of the show as compared to the previous entry. Here are my first impressions.
For starters, this gives more credence that the mysterious character archetype really works for Gundam series protagonists. Hiroto over here gives vibes of both Heero Yuy and Mikazuki Augus, but just the right amounts and not to the extremes these two are known for. I also didn’t feel the too laid back atmosphere that the previous show had. Instead of just going with whatever happens per episode, we’re initially shown of Hiroto’s underlying motive of why he suddenly became active again in GBN, as well as his apparent disdain with the Build Divers. Then there’s this thing with Hinata, yes they are close but it seems there’s something more — well that’s what I got from the ending animation.
About the Core Gundam and the Earthree Gundam, they are all right. The former looks capable by itself despite the small size and the latter looks quite powerful. Then there’s the Gundam Justice Knight, and while its diver is a bit of a joke, I’m hoping to see good battles with that mobile suit. Oh and I’m already thinking of a color study for it.
It might not be the strongest of premieres but I think Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE started on a good note. I’m hoping that it won’t be a series that no one cares afterwards.
