Looks Like I Won’t Skip This: SMP [Shokugan Modeling Project] Hyperlion – Combined Features

We have previously taken a look at the SMP [Shokugan Modeling Project] Hyperlion set, specfically its component Armored Modules, the Altairlion and Hyperlion. Now, let’s check out the behemoth that is the the Hyperlion, which is really why one would potentially pull the pre-order trigger on this guy, myself included.

Formation Helios! Start!

Developed under “Project TD,” this Armored Module is designed for interstellar travel and space environment operations. It is a combined form of the latest Series 77 models, Alterion and Vegalion, and is codenamed HYPER77. Equipped with a total of four third-generation Tesla Drives, its twin modal system gives it the highest level of maneuverability, agility, and speed among Armored Modules. It also boasts high offensive capabilities with gravity-controlled acceleration cannons and tactical integrated missiles.

The XAM-008-HI Hyperlion is formed with the Alterlion at its core and the Vegalion unit basically acting as an armored unit of sorts. The combination itself is done with no replacement parts, while still maintaining good stability, as long as you have the means to display this sizable piece. For scale, here are comparisons and actual measurements against previous SMP Super Robot Wars OG releases.

Before going further, they did want to point out that the Hyperlion itself didn’t get any Cruise Figure transformation within the games, but this kit is able to implement an exclusive transformation with the use of some dedicated parts.

When it comes to mass and sheer robot volume, the SRX still has that towering presence at 360mm tall. That said, the Hyperlion, especially with those nacelles pointing upward, towers over the SRX at 368mm.

On the subject of previous releases, the inclusion of weapon-holding manipulators for the Alterlion means it can use the weapons from those kits. Examples noted here are the Beam Sword from the R-2 and the Booster Rifle from the R-1.

What do you get when you combine interstellar Armored Moduels chockful of weapons? Even more weapons as the Hyperlion can be displayed firing both the 90mm and 110mm GG Cannons simultaneously. Don’t forget, “GG” stands for “Gravity Guidance.” Not only that, pointing the nacelles of both units forward will recreate the G Driver X Combination attack, basically four high-powered railguns dealing even more damage than their indivdual components.

The official Bandai Candy blog mentions how they carefully considered the movement of the Vegalion’s nacelles for this combination so as to not clash with the Altairlion.

It also stands to reason that all missiles and effect parts used for the individual machines are also useable for the combination, which makes the resulting display inch closer to the ridiculous side of the spectrum.

Let’s not forget the Sonic Sabers, which uses not only the effect parts from the Altairlion, but those with the Vegalion as well, since they can’t be used in Cruise Figure form. Both sets are attached around their respective nacelles and they do appear to still be manageable despite the weight added to each.

With everything said, it might be a little hard to imagine how much plastic is included in this set. So, here’s a photo just to better illustrate.

That’s a whole slew of missiles, trail effects, and display stand arms. There’s also a multiple-base stand to help prop up the combined Hyperlion unit, along with logos of the component Armored Modules, “Series 77” to which both Altairlion and Vegalion are part of, and “Project TD” which actually stands for Project Terrestrial Dream, initially meant for deep space exploration.

As I’ve mentioned previously, this might be the most expensive SMP set I’ll ever purchase, even if I’m not the biggest Super Robot Wars OG fan. I did purchase the RIOBOT SRX some years ago so the precedent is there.
