As someone living in the Philippines, Voltes V is more or less engrained in the pop culture DNA, so much so that nostalgia for the property has persisted throughout the decades since the original broadcast during the 70s. Personally, I’m getting tired of the nostalgia, but I still appreciate it, especially after the success of Voltes V: Legacy, the Philippine-produced live action adaptation.

I previously got The Robot Spirits figure and it’s a good desktop display piece, but for those who wanted a fully transforming premium figure, then Tamashii Nations has you covered as they’re finally opening solicitations for the Soul of Chogokin GX-118 Voltes V (Voltes V: Legacy) set. I have the Chogokin 40th Anniversary version of GX-31 and my nationality basically requires me to get this one as well.

Compared to the original, the Voltes V: Legacy version is much more detailed, with surface sculpting and panels you’d expect from a real machine, and this set captures all those details, plus more.
For starters, the combination of the individual Volt machines has been meticulously recreated. Obviously, some of the visuals seen from the series isn’t possible at this scale, but Tamashii Nations got as close as they could. They note how the canopies of both the Volt Cruiser and Volt Lander can be flipped to show deployed shutters during this sequence.
One change I did see is how the cockpit of the Volt Panzer flips to the back instead of retracting inside the torso. I believe this creates a much stable connection that should still allow for torso articulation.

For gimmicks, Voltes V can replicate the Voltes Bazooka attack via supplementary parts, along with open manipulator/hand parts to support the barrel when in use. They also mention that by default, the “perfect transformation” manipulators that fit inside Volt Bomber are still able to hold weapons, though you can always opt to switch them for better displays.

Weapons include a pair of Super Electromagnetic String, which is made of flexible material to replicate its use in the series. Likewise, the tips can be replaced with dedicated parts to replicate the Super Electromagnetic Top attack.

And of course, Voltes V won’t be complete without the Tenkuuken (or the Laser Sword as it’s known locally) with its segmented look. The V emblem on the chest can be removed to accurately display the sword when in use. Likewise, manipulators with an angled wrist connection are also included to properly point the sword downwards.

The initial toy-exclusive Tank Mode configuration of the original was finally made into canon as it appeared in the series. And of course, this Soul of Chogokin figure is able to do the same using special connector parts.

While the set doesn’t include a rack with accompanying name plaque for the weapons, it does come with a dedicated display base for the individual Volt Machines.

So while I seemingly am getting tired for the endless admiration for this super robot, I am proud that a local creation is given such a premium collector piece. While I prefer Action Toys to take a shot at this design and create a Mini Action version, I won’t hold my breath it and will gladly place a pre-order for this guy.
