Back to High Grades We Are: HG Ryuohmaru (Mashin Hero Wataru) Revealed

Mashin Creator Wataru has wrapped up towards the end of June and possibly along with it its line of model kits. I haven’t watched the series outside a couple of the opening episodes, and those gave me a quick vibe of what I should expect. In the meantime, I am still getting the kits, and I do plan on getting Saint-Ryuohmaru when it drops locally.

And on that note, we are also getting another Ryuohmaru kit.

This is in continuation of the ongoing High Grade releases from the Wataru franchise, the last of which was Ryujinmaru from the Mashin Hero Wataru (i.e., the original) back in mid-2023. So it does make sense to get its upgraded form, a couple of years after.

Those well versed with the franchise should be familiar with how the original Ryuohmaru looks, and the kit is able to capture it really well. Here’s how it compares with the HG Ryujinmaru kit.

And here’s Ryuohmaru from Mashin Creator Wataru for further comparison.

As seen above before the comparison photos following it, Ryuohmaru comes with its essential weapons and accessories, chief among these being the Phoenix Dragon Sword (鳳龍剣, Hōryuken) and a shield. It can also transform into Phoenix Mode which we’ll check later.

Provided the intentionally disproportioned design of these Mashin units, it may be hard to place them in dynamic poses. To accomplish this, at least for Ryuohmaru, the waist joint can extend for wider range of movement as demonstrated in the image above. You can also see how the forehead has a special mark when using the Phoenix Dragon Sword attack. This is done via replacement parts, which I assume would be the black space on the forehead part. Either that dragon mark is via 3D stickers or is a separate part along with the replacement black piece.

As alluded earlier, Ryuohmaru can transform into Phoenix Mode, and it’s sort of doing a Gundam Epyon where the legs in its normal Mashin mode becomes part of the front section in Phoenix Mode. It doesn’t become a two-headed wyvern but the legs do become the wings. The Phoenix Mode head is actually stored on its “rear end” in Mashin mode while the shield becomes the tail accessory.

Bandai Spirits has been doing a slow but sure trickle of High Grade releases from the Wataru franchise, and it’s easy to miss what’s already out there. So here’s a little table to show which ones from which series are already available. Hint, they’re not that many.

I was planning on listing all those forms from both Cho Mashin Hero Wataru and Mashin Hero Wataru: The Seven Spirits of Ryujinmaru but they’re a little bit too many to mention and I doubt all those will get High Grade kits. But at the bare minimum, I think they should produce New Ryujinmaru from Wataru 2 and the Cho Wataru version of Ryujinmaru.

Regardless, I might pick this kit whenever it drops since it doesn’t appear to be a Premium Bandai exclusive.
