I’ve made some great progress with the RG Evangelion Unit-01 from Evangelion 3.0+1.0 over the weekend. It might be more complex than your typical High Grade build, but I found a new sense of appreciation for the conveniences Real Grades bring to the table, literally and figuratively.

For starters, the kit isn’t obviously 1/144 scale and is larger than its RG GUnpla counterparts. It might not be scale-accurate as a 1/144 scale Evangelion should be much, much larger, but the larger size does go well with 1/144 scale Gundams. So while I’ll keep my Revoltech figures as far as collecting Evangelions go, building this RG should provide a better display piece with my Gundam kits. The same new found scale appreciation is also applicable to MODEROID kits, most of which are usually 160mm tall.
Next is the convenient build experience. While RGs are obviously more complex than HGs, especially with this guy, the intricate parts separation slashes a good chunk of time I’ll usually spend in masking and painting. To the point that I can consider RGs as good breathers whenever I get tired of all the masking and painting needed for HGs. This might not be the same for older RGs, but that’s for me to decide.
I’m targeting to complete this kit the soonest as I only have the other arm and the weapons to build. Though applying the wrap-around decal for the small entry plug piece would be quite interesting.
