Am I Ready to Handle Macross-Level Decal Work? RG Evangelion Unit-01 (Evangelion 3.0+1.0) – Completed Build

There’s supposed to be a one week gap between W.I.P post #2 and this one, though I apparently forgot to click publish on that post. In case any one would be picky of such details.

There’s some construction at the house at the moment so things may slow down for a week or two when it comes to new kit builds. Fortunately for me, I was able to finish this last one, which is also remotely related and in time with the premiere of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX this week.

For starters, I’m not sure why I decided to keep the silver-molded plastic parts as they are and not paint them in proper silver. It’s probably because of my mindset that Real Grades don’t need color-correcting paint to look good. And they do for this kit, although I’ll probably paint similar parts on the RG Hi-Nu Gundam when I build it. I’m also not the biggest fan of how the hip joints are assembled, as they can get dislodged easily every time the legs are swinged forward or backward.

Then there’s the wrap around decal used in the entry plug. Compared to other water slides, those made by Bandai are a little tougher and would need more finagling to set in place. Ultimately, it does make me wonder if I’m ready for the swath of decals needed for those HG 1/100 Macross kits. But that won’t be my problem any time soon since I am planning to follow this kit with either the Realize Model Blade Liger or the HG L-Gaim as seen here. Yes, I backpedaled on my previous decision to stick with The Robot Spirits versions for my L-Gaim collection. I’ll explain more once I started building this kit.

Overall, it’s a great kit, and gave me more appreciation for slightly larger kits to be included in my collection. That said, I don’t think I’ll be building the other RG Evangelion kits as I will stick with my Evangelion Revoltech figures, unless of course something totally different gets announced.

Thoughts?
