Ever since Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM came out in January of this year, we’ve been teased of a story that happened months prior to the setting of the film. This came in the form of a quick flashback and the light novels distributed during when the film was in theaters. Chief series director Mitsuo Fukuda was even hinting a possible OVA or something to tell this story, and it looks like that’s now in production.

Seen as a logo reveal towards the end of one of the screenings of the SEED FREEDOM special edition was the announcement that Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO is now in production. There was apparently a short PV shown following the epilogue and as per the title, this will be showing these aforementioned events.

Recall that following the “Freedom Heist Incident,” the original Strike Freedom Gundam from Gundam SEED DESTINY was destroyed with the help of Foundation’s Black Knight Squad. Well, ‘destroyed’ is the operative term as it was rebuilt by Erica Simmons as the Strike Freedom Type II for testing new mobile suit technology.
As far as Gunpla goes, I’m sure we’ll get a whole load of possible recolors and retools from the SEED FREEDOM ones. I am curious if Bandai Spirits will take this as an opportunity to release a ‘revive’ or ‘2.0’ of the HGCE Strike Freedom Gundam based on its appearance in SEED FREEDOM ZERO. Speaking of Gunpla, packaging for the upcoming HGCE Destiny Gundam Spec II & Zeus Silhouette has been released and we are indeed getting one of those larger HG boxes.

Going back to SEED FREEDOM ZERO, I am curious as to how will this take form? I’m leaning towards an OVA though with the success of SEED FREEDOM, it’s basically anything goes that will generate the most return to Sunrise / Bandai Namco Filmworks. Other than the title and the clip that appeared after the special edition screenings, not much is known on the actual release window for this production.
