Stickers or Masking Nightmare? MODEROID Lio de Galon

One of the announcements that got me quite excited earlier this year during Mecha Smile Impact 2023 is MODEROID Lio De Galon, the not-final form of the main protagonist mecha from Promare (read: Promare (2019) Movie Review). The film featured a lot of outlandish designs, as with most Studio Trigger productions, and Lio de Galon is one of those that take the cake in this category, though still not going several levels of crazy unlike those we see in Gurren Lagann. In case you’ve forgotten how this thing looks, then here are CG renders of the kit Good Smile Company has released for solicitation.

The kit is mostly black, but also features a lot of highlighted areas in pink, yellow, and some in light blue. If this is a pre-painted action figure then all these color applications won’t be a problem. But for a model kit you have to build yourself, this is something you’d probably consider. According to the official solicitation, the yellow areas will come as yellow plastic but the kit will include color-correcting stickers for all the pink parts to create the light-emitting effect.

Now that’s a lot of pink areas requiring stickers so I’m expecting a huge sticker sheet to come with this kit. If you’re the type who’s totally against the use of stickers then you’ll have quite the challenge of masking and painting all those pink areas. But at least you’re given the option. The white parts in the head, feet, and the Matoi Decker, which we’ll check out later, are made from translucent plastic.

Articulation shouldn’t be much of an issue since Lio De Galon has a straightforward humanoid design with not much to get in the way of joint movement. As you can see in the CG renders above, it’s able to reproduce the “Gainax Pose” and is able to do a three-point stance or as many calls it, the “superhero landing” pose.

As mentioned earlier, Lio De Galon comes with its single, yet most important, accessory: the Matoi Decker. I can’t remember exactly what this is supposed to be, whether it be a spear or an axe or something completely different, but it comes in the same translucent plastic as those we see on the head and legs.

While I do want to have a copy of this kit in my collection, I’m not exactly in a rush to secure a pre-order, but we’ll see. In case you do want to secure a pre-order, then head on to the link below.
