Bandai-Namco has teased yet another Gundam game earlier today, entitled Mobile Suit Gundam U.C. Engage and it would be a mobile app for both Android and iOS. But before I go further with the very little we have right now, I would like to highlight something I’ve been noticing in the last couple of reveals, which I’m very pleased about.
In the 40 years that the Gundam franchise has existed, it has explored multitudes of stories about war and the individuals entangled in the conflict. This has led to numerous series with diverse characters of varying backgrounds. But if there’s something that many people think the franchise lacks, to which I also agree, is a story that’s primarily driven by a female lead. Granted we’ve had numerous strong female characters in the past, to which original Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino is really a proponent of, but we’ve yet to get a story that really focuses on a female character outside of side stories.
That might be changing starting in 2021 as they have revealed numerous works with female leading characters. We have the game Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation Code Fairy which has a group of female Zeon soldiers taking the charge. There’s the ongoing online short Gundam Breaker Battlogue which also has a story seemingly driven by a couple of female leads. Then, going to speculation territory, is the next main line Gundam series Mobile Suit Gundam THE WITCH FROM MERCURY. And while we’re just picking the ‘witch’ in the title, this has led many to hope that we would also get a female lead in the next series. So having another reveal featuring a female main character is very much appreciated.
As mentioned, we know next to nothing regarding its story, besides being set in the Universal Century. The game’s website shows our female lead, who is a test pilot from Anaheim Electronics, and has some semblance with Marida Cruz. On that note, also shown among the gallery of other Gundam pilots is Jutta Qasim who’s piloting the Moon Gundam. I’m really hoping that story would get animated at some point.
Another interesting tidbit are the pair of Gundams revealed in the key visual. While both look to be derivatives of the RX-78-2, one has a masculine silhouette while the other is more feminine, the latter even having a skirt for its rear armor. They do look quite interesting and I’m really hoping Bandai Spirits would do its thing and release kits of these designs.
They also released a quick promo video that has snippets of the Gundams seen above, and actual gameplay. The full reveal of the game will happen on November 16 so keep looking at this space for more details and updates.
