While I have a rekindled appreciation of SD-based mecha series like Granbelm or Granzort, mainly thanks to Good Smile Company’s MODEROID kits, I still find it challenging to watch their respective series, except for Granbelm, due to their younger target audience. Case in point with Mashin Souzouden Wataru, so I wasn’t aware that the main hero machine (or mashin) Ryujinmaru is slated to get its first upgrade as Ryuohmaru.

Compared to the previous reboot, Chou Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, which took upgrades as multiple “side forms”, Mashin Souzouden Wataru will have Ryujinmaru take on a more traditional evolution route, as seen the reveal of the Ryuohmaru kit. I will put the Ryujinmaru kit below for reference and comparison.

Compared to Ryujinmaru, Ryuohmaru flips the dominant color from blue to white, and goes for a more symmetrical design with the two dragon heads on both shoulders. We also start seeing the use of clear parts for the sword and some of the armor bits. Lastly, Ryuohmaru seems to have half the number of digits on the feet when compared to Ryujinmary, not sure why but that’s a thing.

The main gimmick for this line is the use of a common joint system that provides good poseability and cross-compatibility between other kits in the line. You can basically mix and match parts from multiple kits to create your own Mashin. This is something that Bandai Spirits has been integrating with their recent releases. From the use of a standardized attachment points, to 3mm hard points for accessories, it’s all about customizing your builds just like Lego.

I won’t be tracking down this kit like first batch Ryujinmaru with the bonus parts, but I’ll probably get one sooner or later.
