Scrander Cross… Literally: The Robot Spirits ⟨Side SUPER⟩ Mazinger X

In December 2024, Tamashii Nations opened pre-orders for The Robot Spirits <Side SUPER> Spazer & Mazinger Z set from Grendizer U. And if you saw the preview video from the Bandai Spirits YouTube channel, then you will notice how small Mazinger Z is when compared to Grendizer. You can check out the video below in case you’ve forgotten.

Watch at the 6:39 mark to check out Mazinger Z.

As it turns out, the included Mazinger Z figure was meant to be in-scale with Grendizer, and the smaller stature further illustrated the difference in combat capabilities between the two super robots. Not to mention Mazinger Z getting totally trashed during the opening episodes of the series. With the help of technology from Grendizer and the Vegan Empire Saucer Beasts, Mazinger Z was upgraded into the more powerful Mazinger X. And thanks to Tamashii Nations, we once again are getting another rendition of this interpretation of a classic.

The main body of Mazinger X still shares the same design elements as with any other incarnation of this design, with subtle changes here and there. It’s also significantly larger, now being able to stand toe-to-toe with Grandizer. But the most significant upgrade comes in the form of Jet Scrander X, giving the machine its namesake letter.

Prior to the upgrades, Mazinger Z features curved chest heatsinks, similar to those seen on Energer Z. Now, Mazinger X has the more traditional angular and pointed heat sinks. The knee armor also features a spiked design along with fins on the forearms. Speaking of the forearms, we see more X-themed branding here with the new X-shaped blades as the enhanced Iron Cutter.

When combined with Jet Scrander X, the massive wingspan will intimidate any Vega Saucer Beast, and will definitely look great on your display. Despite the wingspan, it does appear that Mazinger X is able to stand firmly and doesn’t topple back, though I’m also thinking of using the backwards-protruding wings as additional support. But as a machine primarily used for flight, it would be best to be used with a Tamashii Stage or any similar flight stand.

In case you want to display them separately, a dedicated base is also provided to display Jet Scrander X properly.

Grendizer is a 30m-class super robot, and assuming Mazinger Z follows the specifications of the original, then the latter would be 18m tall, which totally explains the size difference seen in the Spazer set. After the upgrades, Mazinger X gets a significant boost and is now in par with Grendizer, both looking good on when displayed together.

I’ve yet to finish Grendizer U at the time of this post, but I think once I have Mazinger X on hand, my coverage for the series should be complete. They might release both Aquadizer and Zeoladizer as Tamashii Web exclusives, but I’m not inclined to getting those. I do find these <Side SUPER> releases to be on the more expensive side, especially when compared to Super Robot Chogokin releases which are technically targeting the same collector demographic. Regardless, I am curious what series they’ll cover next in this subline.
