Box Art Extravaganza: April 2024

With the absence of any particular Gunpla I’m interested in getting this April, let’s swing to the good folks over at Good Smile Company as they do have a couple of releases I’m interested in. Whether those translated to actual purchase is a different question, but regardless, here are some box arts.

Good Smile Company has been doing a great job in releasing these SD fantasy mecha designs as part of their MODEROID line. I did miss several of the more recent kits, including Hyper Granzort and those from Lord of Lords Ryu-Knight. And it looks like I’m also missing King Squasher from NG Knight Lamune & 40 since it’s already sold out, but who knows.

In the meantime, this packaging is gorgeous and maybe I would want to get this kit in all of its golden glory. Just to put some context, I do have a couple of HGUC Delta Gundams in the backlog, With King Squasher being mostly gold, and not chrome plated, I might build this guy as a means to test how I’ll do the gold for the Delta Gundam. We’ll see.

I have an interesting story about this kit, and possibly a good number of upcoming MODEROID kits, and some of you might find this shallow. MODEROID kits are often non-scale, but there are a good number that fit in my collection, which is mainly driven by 1/144 scale Gunpla or similarly sized kits or figures. Good Smile Company does a good job in mentioning the estimated height of their kits upon completion and for some reason, once it reaches 160mm and taller, I become hesitant in getting it. I know a good number of folks prefer larger kits and Master Grades, but I like my desktop-scaled items better.

So, in an attempt to bring some sense to this, I printed a scale accurate ruler in the office since I do have figures on the desk. And you know what, 160mm is alright! In fact, I have a triplet of G1 Optimus Primes right now and I’m fine with the size. MODEROID Garland is 160mm so I might reconsider getting this one, along with similarly sized kits like the upcoming MODEROID Nirvash. But then again, I’ve been cutting back on some pre-orders so let’s see. There’s always Buyee if I need to do catch ups.
