In what appears to be a holiday gift from the people over at Sunrise, we now have our first, and rather short, look at the 2022 movie Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island. Don’t let the 30-second clip fool you as this provides an idea of how they’ll approach this story. Here are some stills I took from the clip.
The one glaring aspect this teaser reveals, is that the movie will be done under a Gundam THE ORIGIN filter as clearly seen with the character designs, and especially the RX-78-02 Gundam. We’re not yet sure how they’ll expand this one-episode story from the original series, but doing this approach allows them to integrate aspects from the Mobile Suit Gundam THE ORIGIN MSD: Cucuruz Doan’s Island spinoff manga. I’ve included the teaser below for your viewing pleasure.
They’ve also released the first poster-slash-key visual for the film, which further ties it to Gundam THE ORIGIN.
Now I know some still discuss the canon status of the anime adaptation of Gundam THE ORIGIN, but with Yoshikazu Yasuhiko taking the helm, I’m not surprised they’re taking this approach with this movie. Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island is slated for an early Summer 2022 release.
