It Took 40 Years to Get Transforming Faction Symbols: Transformers Icons Optimus Prime

Transformers as a franchise is now over 40 years ever since it premiered in 1984. We’ve had countless transforming toys and we’ve seen various depictions of Optimus Prime transform into various things. Including a ballpen, baseball cap, or even the original PlayStation! But who would’ve thought they’ve yet to release an official Autobot logo transforming into Optimus Prime? For a franchise that loves its faction symbols, this took quite a while.

This is Icons Optimus Prime, a Voyager-class figure that transforms from Autobot faction symbol to Optimus Prime. You can’t get simpler than this thing, but I do like the concept and I’m hoping we get more from the other factions like the Maximals among others.

Unfortunately for those who hate the “Games Workshop gray” that Hasbro sometimes uses, this figure is mostly that as the color applications are very limited to the faction symbol bits, and selected parts in robot mode. Though it does look quite articulated so at the very least, this figure should have decent poseability.

Accessories-wise, Icons Optimus Prime doesn’t come with much, but at least they’ve given the essentials. For starters, we have his iconic (pun intended) Ion Blaster, though note that the handle is quite short. I hope it doesn’t become an issue when it comes to actually holding it. The other accessory is a display stand which can support both in robot and faction symbol mode. It doesn’t appear to be a generic display stand so you can’t immediately use it for other figures. But the inclusion is still appreciated.

As someone who collects Optimus Prime figures, and has a good appreciation of novelty items like this one, I am definitely getting Icons Optimus Prime. Mostly for the novelty, but because as mentioned, it took them 40 years to finally create this concept so why not.
