This One’s Not Monkeying Around: Transformers Studio Series Optimus Primal (Rise of the Beasts)

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has been out in cinemas for a couple of weekends and most Transformers fans have seen it and had a good look at how Optimus Primal looked in the film. We already have the mainline/Core Series Rise of the Beasts Optimus Primal figure for a couple of months now and it’s not exactly accurate to what was on screen. And so, everyone is waiting for the Leader class Studio Series version, which was revealed during Hasbro’s live stream yesterday.

For starters, he’s Leader Class, and all the benefits that all in the same class get are with Primal over here. Which means no hollow limbs or joins, more accurate paint work, and better articulation in both robot and beast modes. If you have the mainline Voyager Class version, you can see how this guy looks different, especially in the torso section and the inclusion of that classic Optimus Primal head. I can’t exactly remember if that’s how his face appeared in the film, but I like how this further sets the Studio Series version apart from the mainline one.

For weapons, he comes with a pair of scimitars, just like the mainline Voyager, but this version also has a pair or chain-like parts to link the scimitars and you can have Primal flail these blades in battle.

Optimus Primal also comes with these two accessories. First is the Transwarp Key you can split in half, and if you’ve already seen the film, you know why it can be split. It also comes with this particular axe that we don’t see Optimus Primal use… but we see Optimus Prime use. That’s right, this set includes an accessory for Studio Series Optimus Prime from Rise of the Beasts since Hasbro can’t fit the axe in that figure’s budget.

So, there you go. As far as Rise of the Beasts goes, once I get both Prime and Primal, I’m pretty much done with figure coverage for this movie. But I’m fairly sure Hasbro and Takara Tomy have a lot more on their sleeve, like that Lunar Cruiser Prime that I’m still waiting for pre-orders to open.
