Megatron-armed Optimus is Official: Transformers Studio Series Optimus Prime (Energon Universe)

While I’m not religiously following Skybound Entertainment’s current Transformers run, one of the more popular elements coming out of the comic books is Megatron-armed Optimus Prime. Like Optimus Prime literally has Megatron’s right arm as replacement, the one with the Fusion Cannon.

DNA Designs even has an upcoming upgrade kit for the Commander-class Optimus Priem figure from Transformers: The Movie. But if you want to keep your collection official, then Hasbro has covered with their recent announcement from NYCC for the Transformers Studio Series Optimus Prime from Skybound’s Energon Universe.

It’s based on the well-received Studio Series Commander-class Optimus Prime figure from Transformers: The Movie, but stripped down to just the cab and essential accessories. I do want to note that besides the arm, they also changed the head sculpt to reflect the design from the comics. Some might say this is actually more accurate to the G1 design than the original use of the mold, which I’ll place an image below for reference.

The closer inspection also reveals differences in paint application. The Autobot insignia on the left shoulder is now fully painted instead of a white outline, the top lights on the chest are now unpainted, while the windows are now painted in that light blue color instead of just clear pieces.

This is how the truck mode looks with the obvious Megatron arm replacing Prime’s. It’s an entirely new mold since it needs to fit within Optimus Prime’s transformation. You can also notice how the Fusion Cannon sticks out, directly contrasting the much smaller smoke stacks seen from the other side.

Articulation should also be more than decent with the base figure being one of the best from recent releases. That said, it has been stripped of most accessories found from the Commander-class release so display options might be more limited. But the inclusion of the Fusion Cannon arm should provide unique display options.

While not exactly a one-to-one match of the comic book design, this figure is a good representation using one of the best Optimus Prime figures to date. It doesn’t come with a lot in the package so the $79.99 price tag might be too steep for some. But at least it is compatible with the trailer from the original use of the mold. And it doesn’t get released until one year from now so there’s still time to save up just in case.
