I’ve always associated S.H.Figuarts figures with excellent detail and articulation. That’s mainly because the characters these figures are based off actually do high-flying moves like those from Dragonball or Kamen Rider. We can’t say the same for C-3PO, the beloved protocol who appeared in all nine Skywalker Saga films. He doesn’t punch, he doesn’t kick, but he does… point? He may have inherent limitations in movement and expression, but that doesn’t stop Tamashii Nations from releasing an excellent C-3PO figure. So much so that they also produced this variant to represent his appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Everyone knows C-3PO is a gold protocol droid and fortunately, Tamashii Nations didn’t go the easy route of giving him a gold chrome finish like the Bandai Spirits 1/12 scale model kit. They instead went for a metallic finish that came across as a little matte but did not look dull. Speaking of the finish, this version of C-3PO uses the exact, same mold as the A New Hope version, albeit the unexplained red arms and similarly gold right leg. In designing the articulation, Tamashii Nations also went with the man-in-a-suit approach which translates to movement that’s very screen accurate. I actually have to be creative in thinking of poses to put C-3PO in because of the limited poseability. Display options are further limited by only including a pair of slightly closed hands. What the figure lacks in articulation and accessories is then compensated by the amount of sculpted detail, especially in the arms and the torso section — the latter complete with individually painted wires.
