From a game series that allows mecha crossovers across multiple titles, the Super Robot Wars franchise has delved into its own rich lore with Super Robot Wars Original Generations. Not limited by the boundaries of the “super robot” and “real robot” mecha subgenres, there’s no better representation of these subgenres fusing together than the SRX or Super Robot Type-X. It’s a behemoth of a super robot formed by the combination of three Real Personal Trooper units, all fitting the real robot archetype. The concept is also borderline ambitious that we often see the SRX and its components as completed figures or model kits that forgo any transformation and combination due to complexity. At least, until Sen-Ti-Nel announced that they’ll release a transforming and combining SRX set as part of their RIOBOT line. After several delays, we finally have the complete set and we’ll now look at the R-2 in its upgraded form, R-2 Powered.

Fortunately for collectors, the second SRX set is being sold as the R-2 Powered with all the Plus Parts included in the box. For this upgraded configuration, the base unit receives new shoulder armor parts and a pair of massive Hi-Zol Launchers. This ultimately creates a top-heavy figure as the leg units don’t get upgrades. But thanks to the die-cast internal construction, the completed R-2 Powered is still quite stable. On the other hand, the modest articulation of the base unit is now limited by the new armor parts as these tend to collide with each other with every movement. The two Hi-Zol Launchers connect to the back of the R-2 with die-cast arms with tight joints. They can be too tight so adjusting them can be quite a challenge, especially if you want the launchers to be perfectly symmetrical. I suggest caution with making these adjustments to prevent stressing any parts. Lastly, the display base is able to support this massive figure for aerial poses without any additional issues.
