ABSTRACT

Mid-season upgrades have been a staple of most mecha-based series and GaoGaiGar is no exception. Though unlike other upgrades, Star GaoGaiGar doesn’t replace the original GaoGaiGar. It’s rather a combination of the same machines but forgoes Stealth Gao with Stealth Gao II for its flight/space capability. For the same reason, Bandai didn’t go with a standalone Super Robot Chogokin Star GaoGaiGar figure. Because GaoGaiGar has multiple weapons and accessories (and Bandai’s marketing strategy), several "Key to Victory" sets were released to cover them. Key to Victory Set 2 specifically contains Stealth Gao II to form Star GaoGaiGar, as well as the Gatling Driver. Stealth Gao II by itself is quite massive thanks to its twin nacelles, which when combined with GaoGaiGar could introduce balance issues especially to those with weaker hip/leg assemblies. The set also includes multiple effect parts for additional display options. To simulate Star GaoGaiGar in flight, translucent green parts are included to replace the thrusters in Stealth Gao II though attaching them can be tiresome. Effect parts are also included to replicate the Broken Phantom and Protect Wall attacks. Lastly is the Gatling Driver which is basically an upgraded Dividing Driver with three heads.
