ABSTRACT

Takara-Tomy has been collaborating with various companies in its continuous effort to promote the Transformers brand. This in turn is giving its flagship character, Optimus Prime, opportunities to transform into new alternate modes outside the iconic trailer truck. In 2007, Takara-Tomy made a partnership with Nike to produce the TRANSFORMERS Sports Label line. It featured Transformers characters that transform into Nike Free 7.0 sneakers, all sharing the same mold albeit different colors and head sculpts. Optimus Prime is a half-scale white and red sneaker complete with real fabric shoelaces. Though being a shoe also meant that it doesn’t have any play value other than being a display piece. Transformation into robot mode is relatively simple because the figure is essentially a shellformer. Unfortunately, there also lies its problems and issues. The front portion of the shoe splits and extends to form the lower legs but provides very little leeway for articulation especially in the knees. There’s no waist swivel but the hip assembly is fine though limited. The greatest offenders however are the huge shoe kibble that just hangs over the shoulder armor via ball joints. These immensely hinders arm movement and provides no functional use except for weapon storage. Speaking of weapons, Optimus Prime wields a gun that can be held at two points and splits in half for storage. And as novel as the included shoelaces are, they’re also useless and are just there in robot mode. Overall, this is a very niche piece and would only appeal to hardcore Optimus Prime completionists while casual collectors can just skip this one.
